Last year marked the 200th anniversary of the sinking of the Essex, a whaler rammed by a sperm whale in 1820. It was this incident that attracted international attention and inspired Herman Melville to write his famous novel Moby Dick.
The Essex was built possibly at Nantucket in 1799. In August 1819 she sailed from Nantucket under the orders of Commander George Pollard. On November 16, 1820 the lookout announced the sight of some sperm whales. The commander did not wait for anything else: he lowered three spears that immediately threw themselves in pursuit of the pod of sperm whales entered, in that period, in their mating season. An enormous male, immediately targeted by the Essex men, capsized one of the spears. Two men were saved, taken aboard by the other boats. On November 20, in a moment of calm, the sperm whale dashed against the Essex. The ship, hard hit, did not sink at once and the men on the lances and on the bridge had a moment of indecision that proved fatal. The enormous cetacean re-emerged, hitting again the ship already damaged by the previous impact. When the whaler began to sink, the men remained on the bridge operated the pumps, but in vain.
Artist Bart Sparnaaij was inspired by this sinking to create this stunning drawing and give it to Sea Shepherd to help us keep our ships at sea defending life. [Bart is a leading Dutch illustrator and a graduate of the Willem de Kooning Akademie. His versatile, always hand-drawn, rich and dynamic style suits the scope of the work].
