Every year, in the small bay of Taiji, in Japan, a massacre of innocent beings takes place: the dolphins. The dolphins are taken to aquariums all over the world and trained to amuse the paying public. Those who are not considered suitable are savagely killed...
When we enter a dolphinarium and watch the dolphin show we rarely stop to think about the conditions they live in, let alone wonder where they came from or how they got there. Dazzled by their prowess, we don't see their suffering. If, however, we decided to go beyond that glittering surface, we would discover that in a small bay in Japan, every winter a real massacre takes place, when groups of fishermen take advantage of the migratory routes of the dolphins to trap entire schools from which to select, with the help of expert trainers, the most suitable specimens for life in captivity. While these ones are snatched from their families and sold at a high price to the aquaria of the whole world, the other dolphins become easy preys for the fishermen because, once attacked, they do not abandon the more frail companions. The slaughter begins and the water is tinged with the red of their innocent blood. The red that stands out in the moving black and white pencil illustrations by Roger Olmos, which in this book accompany Geert Vons' gripping tale.
Every year, Sea Shepherd's volunteers risk arrest - and sometimes even their lives - to document the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji Bay: they cannot do anything else, because Japanese law supports the fishermen, and any attempt to hinder them is punished as a crime. This is why it is important to make this story known, especially to children: if they know what cruelty is hidden behind the dolphin shows, they will not want to attend them anymore, thus contributing to the closure of aquariums and undermining the trade of these animals.
