- Book SKIRÀ 40 years of Sea Shepherd

In 1978, with financial support from Cleveland Amory of the Fund for Animals, the Association purchased its first ship (a British fishing vessel Westella) and renamed it Sea Shepherd. Its first mission was to sail to the ice floes of eastern Canada to interfere with the annual killing of harp seal pups known as chamois. That same year, Sea Shepherd hunted down and rammed the infamous pirate whaler Sierra in a port in Portugal, ending its infamous career as a scourge of the seas. Since those early days, Sea Shepherd has embarked on over 200 voyages covering many of the world's oceans and defending and saving defenseless marine life along the way. While the front lines of ocean conservation may continue to change, Sea Shepherd has remained there to defend, conserve and protect marine life and the ecosystems that sustain life on planet earth. This is its story.
